Vol 5 – Chapter 76 (9)

After dinner and a short rest, the production team sent in staff members with a new task card.

Task: Please take the letter addressed to you and read it out loud.

As Rong Yongxin read the instructions aloud, Mu Fu knew exactly what was coming. These letters had been written earlier by the eight guests in the villa. Before joining the show, the production team had specifically asked her to write a letter to her ex, expressing what she’d like to say to them and describing what kind of person they were.

Her eyes met Xu Kangning’s for a brief moment. Mu Fu had a feeling that whatever he wrote about her wasn’t going to be very flattering.

Everyone retrieved their own letter. After glancing around at each other, no one seemed sure who should go first.

Then Xu Kangning spoke up: “Why don’t we start with Yu Mo?”

Now that someone had made a suggestion, the rest quickly agreed.

“I think that works,” Rong Yongxin nodded.

The others seemed fine with it too.

Yu Mo turned to glance at Xu Kangning, who gave him a faint smile.

He looked away and nodded calmly.

His voice was steady and unhurried as he read, “Yu Mo may seem cold at first, but he’s actually a deeply considerate and caring person. He remembers every special day without needing reminders, and he always manages to surprise you on those occasions. That said, he can be a bit clingy. He wants to be kept in the loop about where you’re going and expects you to reply to his messages even when you’re out. He insists on picking you up and dropping you off every day. Overall, being with him is effortless—he always handles things before they become a problem.”

He finished, folded the letter without much care, and set it aside. It was clear he didn’t think much of what his ex had written.

Mu Fu’s heart gave a sudden flutter. She stole a glance at Yu Mo, surprised by how highly his ex spoke of him. He seemed so composed and aloof—who would’ve guessed he had such a strong sense of control?

She wasn’t scared of that. In fact, the idea that someone so reserved and distant could care that deeply about a girlfriend made her pulse quicken.

She liked that type of guy—especially one who liked to stick close. After all, she was the kind of person who loved staying close to her partner.

Mu Fu couldn’t help thinking that she and Yu Mo might actually be a great match… if fate allowed it.

Next up was Ding Binbing. Since Yu Mo had kindly given up his seat earlier, Ding Binbing had taken the empty spot beside him in the living room. He figured Yu Mo wasn’t a bad guy.

Opening his envelope, Ding Binbing paused briefly at the contents before reading aloud: “Binbing has a lot of good qualities. He’s gentle, kind-hearted, and he knows how to enjoy life. He’s the kind of guy who’ll take you out on little adventures when he has free time. The downside is, he often puts work before you. If you want to be with him, you’ll have to accept that part. Still, I don’t regret being with him.”

Mu Fu’s gaze flickered. She noticed a slight glisten in Ding Binbing’s eyes.

Next up was Xia Sihan.

“Sihan is a thoughtful and empathetic girl,” she read. “She never puts others in difficult positions, but often ends up wronging herself for the sake of others. She’s sensitive and gets hurt easily, so you need to be mindful of her safety when you’re with her. Her cooking is amazing, and being with her means discovering little surprises every day. She makes everything feel light and joyful.”

When she finished, Xia Sihan gave a soft smile and carefully folded the letter back into its envelope, holding it tightly in her hands.

Then it was Feng Ningran’s turn.

“Ningran is cheerful, lively, and full of energy. She gets mad a lot, but she’s also easy to coax—as long as you get her something she likes. Life with her is never boring.”

Feng Ningran threw a sweet glance at Rong Yongxin, her smile practically glowing with affection.

“Haha, guess it’s my turn,” Rong Yongxin said with a grin as he unfolded his letter. “Being with Brother Yongxin means a life with zero worries. He’ll spoil you like a princess, and he’ll say ‘I love you’ to you every single day without ever getting tired of it. He’s honestly a great boyfriend.”

That left just Xu Kangning, Wu Qingyi, and Mu Fu.

Xu Kangning slowly opened the letter Mu Fu had written for him. “Kangning is sunny, optimistic, and someone who can basically do anything money can solve.”

He noticed the puzzled expressions on a few faces and chuckled. “I mean ‘a man powered by money.’”

The others let out a small “ohhh,” finally understanding. A few of the male contestants, however, silently raised their internal threat level for him.

Xu Kangning went on, “He knows how to make a girl feel genuinely happy. But if you’re with him, be mindful of how much he actually cares about you.”

Mu Fu sighed quietly to herself. She couldn’t bring herself to be cruel. She’d originally thought of writing, “Be careful—he might not even have a heart,” but in the end, she softened.

Xu Kangning raised his eyebrows. He had been fully prepared for a scathing letter, loaded with grievances. But this? The little bunny was still so kind.

Adorable.

Then it was Wu Qingyi’s turn. Without hesitation, she began to read.

“Qingyi is independent. She doesn’t need anyone to succeed. She’s a good person, too. I really hope she finds someone suitable during the show.”

Her voice faltered near the end, and her eyes turned red.

Mu Fu quietly reached over and hugged her.

Wu Qingyi pulled away gently and smiled. “I’m okay. Mu Fu, it’s your turn.”

Mu Fu looked at her, noting the lingering redness around her eyes. But at least she’d steadied herself. Mu Fu gave a small nod and began opening her letter.

“Although Xiao Fu might seem cold and indifferent at first glance, she’s actually a kind and endearing girl. She’s incredibly self-disciplined, lives with intention, and knows how to manage a household efficiently. In short, she’s a truly outstanding young woman.”

Mu Fu couldn’t tell whether Xu Kangning had just scribbled something down randomly, or if this was genuinely how he saw her. She let out a quiet, cynical laugh in her heart. Either way, it was clear—he didn’t really know her at all.

After the letter-reading segment wrapped up, everyone slowly dispersed to their rooms to rest and tidy up.

But at exactly 10 PM, the guests all received a text message from the production team.

[Mission: Please send a message to the person you felt the most drawn to today. You will also be notified whether your ex chose to send a message to you.]

The atmosphere shifted. Everyone wore slightly different expressions, uncertain and curious—wondering who might choose them, and whether their ex would think of them too.

While the other women were still caught in hesitation, Mu Fu had already decided.

She would send her message to Yu Mo. Of all the men in the villa, he was the one she had the strongest connection with, especially after spending more time together today. It only felt right.

Soon, all eight cast members had sent their messages. Ten minutes later, Mu Fu’s phone buzzed.

She opened it: [You’re adorable]

Mu Fu stared at her screen like a confused subway commuter meme. What did that even mean? Was it a compliment? Didn’t he know that “adorable” was the word you used when you had nothing else to say?

Still, noticing that a few others were still empty-handed, she couldn’t help but feel secretly delighted. She had half-expected not to get a single message tonight. Her lips curled into a soft smile, though she quickly composed herself with others nearby.

A few moments later, another text came through: [Your ex did not choose you.]

Strangely, Mu Fu didn’t feel sad or disappointed. She had half-guessed this would be the outcome, and she hadn’t sent her message to Xu Kangning anyway.

Setting all thoughts of him aside, she now found herself wondering—who had sent her that message? Yu Mo had seemed distant all day, despite their interactions. Could he really have warmed up to her already?

Still, Mu Fu shamelessly decided that “adorable” could count as a personal strength now.

In over twenty years of life, no guy had ever complimented her before—excluding Xu Kangning’s sweet nothings, of course.

Her cheeks flushed faintly. It felt like receiving a love letter for the first time. It was unfamiliar, but lovely. So this is what it felt like—to be liked by someone.

One by one, the other girls began receiving their messages too.

Xia Sihan received three.

[Finally got to eat your cooking again—delicious as always.]

This one was unmistakably from Ding Binbing.

[Had a great time with you today.]

[Your ex chose you.]

Xia Sihan lowered her gaze, deep in thought. That second message could’ve come from one of two people. One was Rong Yongxin—after all, they went to the supermarket together today and he seemed to have a good impression of her. He even took her side during the argument with Feng Ningran. The other possibility… was Xu Kangning. They’d interacted quite a bit as well.

If she had a choice, she’d rather it was from Xu Kangning.

The last woman to receive her messages was Feng Ningran:

[Good night.]

[Your ex chose you.]

Beaming at her phone, Feng Ningran couldn’t hide her joy. Anyone with eyes could tell she’d gotten the message she wanted.

Among the three, the only one who didn’t receive a message from any of the men was Wu Qingyi:

[Your ex did not choose you.]

She lowered her head, expression unreadable.

Over in the men’s dorm, the guys were also waiting for their messages.

Xu Kangning was the first to receive his—four messages all at once.

[It was really nice meeting you.]

[Sleep early. Sweet dreams.]

[I’d like to get to know you better.]

[Your ex did not choose you.]

It was obvious. Aside from Mu Fu, all three of the remaining girls had messaged him.

He had a hunch that Xia Sihan and Feng Ningran would probably pick him, but Wu Qingyi was unexpected.

He guessed the first one came from Feng Ningran—she was the only one who tended to speak with cute little phrases like that. The second sounded like Xia Sihan; the wording felt familiar. The third must’ve been from Wu Qingyi, trying to connect more since they’d barely spoken.

But of course, it was all just speculation.

Then there was the question that really mattered: Who did Mu Fu choose?

His eyes drifted toward Yu Mo, trying to read his expression. Yeah… he had a strong feeling Mu Fu sent her message to Yu Mo. That thought made something twist in his chest.

Yu Mo’s phone buzzed. A message popped up quickly:

[Thanks for today. Good night.]

The tone was cool—polite, but distant.

[Your ex didn’t choose you.]

He gave the second message a quick glance, then turned his focus back to the first one, as if trying to understand its cool politeness.

Meanwhile, the two other men had also received their messages.

Ding Binbing’s shoulders slumped with disappointment.

Rong Yongxin, on the other hand, looked stunned—clearly blindsided by the result. He scanned the room. Yu Mo appeared calm and unreadable. Xu Kangning leaned back casually, relaxed as ever. And Ding Binbing? Clearly deflated.

With a snort of frustration, Rong Yongxin abruptly walked out of the room and headed straight for the gym downstairs. Later, the camera captured him still there at three in the morning, working out in silence before finally turning in.

After he left, Yu Mo and Ding Binbing headed back to their shared room. Xu Kangning and Rong Yongxin were roommates.

In the women’s wing, everyone had retreated to their rooms as well. Mu Fu and Feng Ningran were sharing one, while Xia Sihan roomed with Wu Qingyi.

It was already late. The villa was quiet as the cast began getting ready for bed.

Mu Fu was in the middle of removing her makeup, getting ready for a shower. Thankfully, each room had its own bathroom—no need to wait in line.

Feng Ningran was also at the sink, wiping off her lipstick.

“Hey, Mu Fu,” she asked with a playful grin. “Who do you think is the best-looking among the guys? I think Xu Kangning and Yu Mo are the most handsome.”

Mu Fu paused for a split second. So those two were her targets?

“I think so too,” she said evenly.

“Who do you like the most?”

Mu Fu had expected that question. Of course she wouldn’t pick Xu Kangning—not after seeing how interested Feng Ningran had been in him all day.

She replied, “Yu Mo. He has a refined vibe.”

Feng Ningran lit up. “Great, then we won’t be stepping on each other’s toes! I think Xu Kangning is more attractive.” She leaned in like she was sharing a juicy secret. “And just between us, he’s got abs.”

Compared to Xia Sihan, Mu Fu was clearly more in Feng Ningran’s good graces. Especially after hearing that Mu Fu liked Yu Mo, she felt comfortable enough to gossip like girlfriends do.

Mu Fu: No, not at all. I only said he has a nice vibe and looks good—I never said I liked him, okay?

Still, Mu Fu couldn’t help but be slightly taken aback. Wait, they’re already at the stage where they’re seeing his abs? After just one day?

Luckily, Feng Ningran quickly explained, “Oh, it was when we were cooking dinner tonight. He reached up to grab something from the top shelf and I just happened to see.”

Ah, that makes sense.

But surprisingly, that little conversation brought the two of them closer.

Mu Fu began to feel that, despite Feng Ningran’s short temper and tendency to flare up at the drop of a hat, she was actually pretty straightforward and not the scheming type. Mu Fu liked that. She preferred people who were open and didn’t play games.

Feng Ningran also found herself warming up to Mu Fu. Even though Mu Fu was quiet and didn’t speak much, they seemed to share similar views—and most importantly, she clearly wasn’t interested in Xu Kangning. That was a relief. After observing her closely, Feng Ningran was confident Mu Fu had zero interest in him. She didn’t go out of her way to flatter him, unlike that phony Xia Sihan.
